ScanLit ("the app," "we," "us") lets you scan book shelves and get ratings and reviews for the books you find. This page explains what data we collect, which outside services we rely on to run the app, and how it's used.
We don't sell your data, and we don't use it for advertising. There are no ad networks or trackers built into ScanLit — the only outside services involved are the handful listed below, each doing one specific job to make the app work.
When you create an account, you provide an email address and password. Authentication is handled securely by our backend provider, Supabase — your password is never visible to us or stored by ScanLit directly; Supabase manages it on our behalf using industry-standard security practices.
When you scan a shelf, the photo is sent securely to our server, which forwards it to our AI provider, OpenAI, to identify book titles and authors. Photos are used only to perform this identification and are not stored by us after processing.
Books you save (your to-be-read list, folders, and recent scans) are backed up to our database, hosted by Supabase, under your account so they're available if you sign in on a new device or reinstall the app. This data is private to your account.
ScanLit is built on top of a small number of outside services, each handling a specific part of the app:
We don't use any analytics, advertising, or tracking tools beyond what's listed above.
To show ratings, reviews, and purchase links, the app looks up publicly available information from Goodreads and Amazon. No personal information about you is shared with these services as part of that lookup. If you tap a link to open a book's Goodreads or Amazon page, you'll leave the app and that site will receive the ordinary connection information any website receives from a visitor — such as your IP address and basic browser/device information — governed by that site's own privacy policy, not ours.
We keep your account and library data for as long as your account is active. Scan photos are never retained beyond the moment they're processed. If you delete your account, your account and library data are removed immediately, both from our servers and from your device. Limited technical logs (for example, error logs used to diagnose problems) may be kept briefly for security and debugging purposes before they're cleared.
Want a copy of your data, or need something corrected? Email support@scanlit.ca and we'll help.
You can delete your account at any time from within the app. This permanently removes your account and library data from our systems and from your device.
ScanLit is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.
We may update this policy from time to time. Continued use of the app after changes means you accept the updated policy.
